    How 1099 tax is calculated

    1. Net profit = 1099 income minus business expenses. This is the number every other step uses.
    2. Self-employment tax = net profit × 0.9235 × 15.3% (12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare).
    3. Adjusted income = net profit + other income − half your SE tax (deductible).
    4. Taxable income = adjusted income − standard deduction for your filing status.
    5. Income tax applies the federal brackets, then quarterly payments = total ÷ 4.

    Frequently asked questions

How much tax do you pay on 1099 income?+

Most 1099 contractors pay 25–35% of net profit: 15.3% self-employment tax on 92.35% of profit, plus federal income tax at your marginal rate, plus state tax where applicable. The calculator above splits the two federal pieces for you.

How much should I set aside from each 1099 payment?+

30% is the practical rule for most freelancers earning under $100k. If you're in a high-tax state or netting more than $150k, use 35%.

Do I pay self-employment tax on gross or net income?+

Net. You subtract business expenses first, then multiply by 0.9235 and apply the 15.3% rate. Every deductible dollar saves you about 15 cents in SE tax alone before income tax.

    When are 1099 taxes due?+

Quarterly: April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year. Missing them triggers an underpayment penalty of roughly 8% annualized on the shortfall.

Does this calculator include state tax?+

No. It estimates federal income tax and self-employment tax only. Add your state's rate on top — typically 0% to 13% depending on where you live.
