A clean 5-step migration — clean, export, import, connect, verify. Years of history moved in one evening, with zero data loss.
To move your business finances from Excel to an accounting app: (1) clean up the spreadsheet — strip summary rows and pivots; (2) export to CSV with date, description, amount, category columns; (3) pick an app (SnapBooks, Wave, FreshBooks); (4) import the CSV and connect your bank; (5) verify by running a P&L and comparing against your old sheet. Total time ~2 hours.
Delete pivot tables, summary rows, color-coding, and merged cells. Keep four columns: date, description, amount, category. The cleaner the CSV, the smoother the import.
File → Download → CSV (one sheet per file). If you have multiple years on separate tabs, export each separately — you'll import them in order.
SnapBooks ($15/mo, AI-powered, modern), Wave (free, limited), FreshBooks ($19+/mo, service businesses), QuickBooks ($30+/mo, only if a CPA requires it).
Upload the CSV — the app maps your categories to its chart of accounts. Then connect your business bank via Plaid so future transactions sync automatically.
Generate a Profit & Loss for last quarter in the new app. Compare to your spreadsheet. If they match within a few dollars, the migration worked. Done.
SnapBooks imports your CSV, connects your bank, and lines up a P&L you can verify against your old sheet. $15/mo, 7-day free trial.

No. CSV preserves every row. Most modern accounting apps (SnapBooks, Wave, FreshBooks) accept a standard date/description/amount/category CSV and map columns automatically.
At minimum, the current tax year. Ideally the last 2 years so you can compare year-over-year. SnapBooks has no row limit on CSV imports.
No. The process is designed to be DIY. If you already have a CPA, send them the post-import P&L for a sanity check — but you don't need them to drive the migration.
The importer maps to a standard chart of accounts. You'll confirm 10–30 mapping decisions during import. After that, the app auto-categorizes new transactions for you.
